Hypnotherapy - Fact or fiction
Picture the scene…
A seaside town, the amusements, fairground rides, and candy floss. The somewhat shifty, perhaps even dishevelled hypnotist on stage with his bawdy humour and innuendo. This is often people’s perception of what hypnotherapy is, and although this exists clinical hypnotherapy is much more. In this blog we shall dispel some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding hypnotherapy.
Firstly, let’s look at what hypnosis is. The word comes from the Greek meaning “to sleep”, although hypnosis occurs when the mind is in a Theta state which is just below the level of sleep. We all experience hypnosis on a daily basis. Don’t believe me? Have you ever been driving and then realised you do not remember driving the last few miles? Or drifted into a trance like state whilst reading a book or watching TV? All hypnosis is self hypnosis, we are merely facilitators. If you want to be hypnotised you can be.
A lot of people avoid hypnotherapy because they worry they will reveal their darkest secrets or be forced to do something against their will. No doubt, in part, this comes from seeing what stage hypnotists are apparently able to make people do. In the simplest terms you can not be forced to do anything you do not want to. The primary job of the subconscious/unconscious mind is to protect you. So why have I seen people dancing like chickens you ask? Remember all these people chose to go to a hypnotists show. They also chose to go on stage and be hypnotised. Now of course this is not for everybody but the participants are willing and therefore the subconscious allows this to happen. You can never be forced to do anything you are not comfortable with or be made to do things against your will. Any therapist who tried this would get either no response from the client or they would open their eyes and break trance.
Another concern is that you could get stuck in trance. Again this is a common misconception. Lets say your hypnotherapist fainted and banged their head. All that would happen is at some point you would either bring yourself out of trance or have a relaxing doze from which you would wake naturally.
Once you ignore the antics of stage hypnotism, not that there's anything wrong with it as everything has its place, clinical hypnotherapy is worth considering as a non-invasive alternative to other therapies. Hypnotherapy can help with anything from weight loss to anxiety, to pain management, to fears and phobias, and much more.
